We know that the news of having to replace your current AC / Heating system is a tough pill to swallow.  So often, we forget about the green or beige box that sits outside all year long. Then, the extremes of the season begin to hit and that faithful box just gives up.  It cannot go any longer.  It has sprung leaks in the evaporator coil, or somewhere else.

The good news is that the new units on the market today are so energy efficient that you wind up paying less to the electric company.  Most units that are about 10 years old may have started at around 8 SEER.  After time, the efficiency of that unit might be a 5 or 6 SEER at best.  Today, the minimum SEER rating is a 13! You will definitely be able to see a difference in the kilowatt usage in your electric bill.  This, of course, translates into lower electric bills throughout the year. Here is a chart that was developed to show the potential savings.

Today is a great day to look into replacing your unit.  We have a PRESEASON SALE going on right now.  You can save up to $1250 on new units.  You don’t even have to get the highest efficiency unit to get a discount either!  We want to find the right unit for your home and budget.

Speaking of budgets, Arctic Air has a number of different low monthly payment options available for our clients.  One plan is 0% interest for 12 months (the balance must be paid before the end of the 12 months). I have another plan that is available with VERY LOW monthly payments also.  Please feel free to contact me if you would like more information.

Arctic Air even has plans available for clients that have less than perfect credit. Bad things happen to good people and we want to be sure you know that we are here to help.

Please give us a call if you have any questions about getting a new unit installed in your home.  Once we determine the right unit for your home, Mike will help guide you through getting the right financing set up for you.

York air conditioning and heating system

This week has been a really good week for us.  We were able to help 3 families that needed air conditioning desperately.  We were able to get the financing in place and get their ac units installed. Each family was greatly appreciative of the respect and service that they received.

Flowertown Festival, Cooper River Bridge Run and the Family Circle Cup

Which will you attend? The Flowertown Festival (aka Azalea Festival), the Family Circle Cup or the Cooper River Bridge Run?

This is a BIG weekend for the Charleston SC area. Hopefully, it won’t be too rainy, and all of the events will be successful with no major problems.

Think about the sheer number of people coming to our area.  We have the Family Circle Cup Tennis Tournament, the Cooper River Bridge Run and the Azalea Festival all going at the same time.  Here is a short video on the Azalea Festival.

I always enjoy attending the Flowertown Festival.  The Summerville YMCA does such a good job at putting this on.  I know that the planning and coordinating must be a bear to get through, but the result is always fantastic.  Thanks in advance to all of the coordinators, volunteers, public servants (police, fire, and medical), participants, vendors and attendees.

charleston springWe are very proud to call Charleston (Summerville, more specifically) our home. We live in an area that has such a rich and interesting history, beautiful gardens and parks, warm and friendly people, and great restaurants and culture.

Staci and I may make Sunday our Day-cation. It will be nice to get out of the house, and enjoy the weather. It is always nice to wander through the booths at the Flowertown Festival, and to bump into a old friend or two. (I may have to wear a mask to keep some of the pollen away, but that is ok.)

This would be a great weekend to get together with family, friends and loved ones and enjoy each other’s company.

(Before you head out, check those AC filters if you didn’t on the April 1st.  If they are dirty, change them with new ones.)

Here is to wishing you a wonderful weekend!

Time to Check those AC Filters!

Well, another month is about to pass and April is staring us in the face. In South Carolina, we can definitely say that we have had a winter season!

With all of that yellow stuff floating around, we can also say that Spring is in the air.  I can honestly say that I am looking forward to warmer weather!

[stextbox id=”warning”]Time to check your AC filters.  This simple task is vitally important to the well-being of your unit.  Don’t put it off another day.  If it is dirty, replace it![/stextbox]air filter air conditioning heating charleston sc

One of the tell tale signs of Spring is the Summerville YMCA’s Azalea Festival. It is so nice to get out and enjoy the day.  Tons of people, artisans all over, that carnival style food, and the many activities, make for a great day with family and friends. If you haven’t been to the Azalea Festival, you should come out this year.

money

Overpaying the Electric and Gas Company is like burning your money.

Has your air conditioning and heating unit been struggling to keep up?  Have you noticed that your electric bill keeps getting higher and higher, but you are still uncomfortably hot or cold?  Were you told that you have small leaks in your coil? If so, it may be time to consider replacing your a/c.

Here are some things to think about before calling a air conditioning / heating contractor to your home.  The answers to the following questions will help your contractor give you recommendations about the right comfort products for your home.

  1. What air conditioning and heating products do you currently use in your home? An air conditioner? A Heat Pump? A Gas Furnace? A Dehumidifier?
  2. Are you experiencing any issues with air quality? For example, do you have any issues with dust, asthma, allergies, etc?
  3. Are you satisfied with the comfort level in your home during the winter and summer months?
  4. How long do you plan to live in your home?
  5. Do you spend a lot of time away from your home?
  6. Is finding an air conditioning and heating unit that maximizes your energy savings important to you?

How does a replacement ac / heating unit pay you back?

Because of the technological advancements that are made every year, manufacturers are improving energy efficiencies as much as 7% per year.  If your heat pump, air conditioner or furnace is more than 10 years old, it might be a wise decision to replace your unit.

York air conditioner

Our highest efficiency YORK units can cut your heating and cooling bills in half, depending on the efficiency of your old unit.

In summary, if you are experiencing high electric bills, you have a unit that is needing constant repairs, or your air conditioning and heating unit is over 10 years old, it may be time to consider a new unit.

Call today at 843-821-0937 to have a consultant help you decide which unit is the right fit for you and your family.

How I saved almost $50 on my electric bill!

Hello Everyone,

This is the true story of how I saved $50 on my last electric bill!

programmable 7 day thermostatThis weekend Staci and I received the dreaded electric bill from SCE&G. With all of the super cold weather that we have had in the month of February, we were bracing ourselves for the bad news.  I have spoken to several people, and they have reported $400 – $500 electric bills.  Uggh!

Staci and I have lived in our home for about 5 years.  In a previous blog on thermostats (click here to ==> see that blog), I mentioned that we were installing a new digital thermostat made by Honeywell.  The thermostat that we installed is the Honeywell Prestige IAQ 2.0 Comfort System.

remote control thermostatThis thermostat is definitely technologically advanced, yet super easy to use.  With the touch screen, adjustments and programming are super easy.  In addition, we added the portable thermostat.  Now, when we go to bed or are upstairs, we allow the portable thermostat to control our air conditioner.

We had this thermostat install on January 31, 2014.  Troy, one of our technicians, installed it for us.

honeywell mobile siteI must say that I am a bit of a geek when it comes to technology!  I love being able to use my phone or ipad to control the thermostat.  The ultimate in convenience (and laziness).  Yes, I can be sitting in my recliner with my ipad, and adjust the thermostat!  Totally Awesome (in my opinion)!

Just after Troy installing the thermostat, I programmed our “schedule” in myself.  Again, it was super easy!

Now all of that is great, but I only expected to have a “cool” thermostat, and the ability to adjust it from my cell phone or ipad.

I have my electric bill in hand, and this is what I saw…. (account information cropped).

sce&g comparison

The savings is about $50!  Just by putting a schedule in place and letting the thermostat control it.  I will also admit, there were times in February (remember the two ice storms) that the thermostat was actually adjusted to warm our home a little more!

I am not sure that everyone will experience the same savings, but this is a great place to start. And to think, this is just the first month!

Give me a call (843-821-0937), if you would like to see about getting your new thermostat installed and programmed.

Time Change and Our Spring Preseason Sale!

[stextbox id=”warning”] TIME CHANGE REMINDER… don’t forget to set your clocks ahead 1 hour on Sunday, March 9, 2014 @ 2am.[/stextbox]

Hello Everyone,
Time to Spring forward! Arctic Air, Charleston SCWell, Spring is almost here and I cannot wait.  In the past, I have not minded the cold… I must be getting old. I am ready for the warmer days of spring. I can’t wait to be able to wear shorts, flip flops, and a t-shirt outside again.  Oh, and I am ready for there to be sunlight outside when I get home.

I am about to catch a case of spring fever.

As spring begins to move into the lowcountry, don’t forget to show that box that sits outside some TLC (tender loving care). Give us a call, and let us get your air conditioner in tip-top-shape for the hot months ahead.  It is recommended that your HVAC system be checked out at least 2 times per year. (Just think of how hard your heater has worked this winter.)

These “tune-ups” will insure that your system is working at its peak performance.  When a ac system is not working properly, it costs more to run the unit. How, you ask? In your electric bill.

In addition, these inspections can help prevent untimely major repairs, such as a compressor replacement. Call to schedule your appointment today.

A/C Tips … Spring is right around the corner!

A/C Tips … Spring is right around the corner!

Hello Everyone,

charleston springOur weather in South Carolina is always hit or miss when it comes to the winter months.  Last week, we had a terrible winter storm. Some South Carolinians still do not have electricity.  And a week later, we are hitting record high temperatures. Go figure!

This week has definitely given us “Spring Fever!”  The beautiful mild days with warm sunshine beaming down… I know that I love spring time in Charleston SC.

With that in mind, before you know it, the 80°- 90°F temperatures will be here.  One thing that most people don’t think about is when the temperatures heat up, the A/C (air conditioner) is coming on.  It is real easy to flip that switch on the thermostat, and to get that air conditioner cranking out the cool air.  But, is your A/C ready to get to work?

All cars need preventive maintenance, and your a/c is no different.  Your heating and air conditioning system needs some TLC (tender loving care) also. It has worked hard to keep you warm and cozy this winter.  Now it is time to change gears for the warm to hot days to come.

Your A/C is in need of preventive maintenance.  “Why?”, you might ask.  To keep it in tip top shape and running most efficiently. One thing that Staci and I cannot stand is a high electric bill.  What is worse… a high electric bill AND not being comfortable in our home! When your unit is not running efficiently, you being to pay for it … in your electric bill (ouch!)

In addition, these inspections detect potential problems before they become expensive problems.  When repairs are caught early, you can avoid costly repairs, and possibly, keep your unit from having to be replaced.

A few weeks ago, Arctic Air had a customer that cal us because their heating unit was not working.  When we got there, we did our usual diagnostic. This is what our service technician found.  There was an electrical fire inside their unit.  All of the wiring had to be fixed. If this unit had preventive maintenance done by Arctic Air, we would have found a loose electrical connection.  This loose electrical connection caused the fire!  This is one of the items that is on our check list to be inspected.

burnt up wires

I am not sure if you can see it in this picture, but you may notice all of the burnt wires on the lower right side of the unit.  Because of the vibration from the fans and other parts, connections are bound to come loose.  This is NOT what you want to see, especially at your home.

Here is what our inspections consist of:

  • Inspect condenser coil
  • Test and adjust operating pressures
  • Test starting capabilities
  • Inspect blower assembly
  • Test amp draws on motors
  • Test voltage on motors
  • Test and check safety controls
  • Clean condensate drain
  • Lubricate necessary moving parts
  • Calibrate thermostat
  • Check for proper air flow
  • Measure temperature difference
  • Check expansion valve
  • Inspect and spray evaporator coil with cleaner (accessible only)
  • Test in a/c cycle
  • Check all electrical connections and capacitors

If you join our Discount Club, you receive a Summer Tune-up and a Winter Tune-up, no overtime charges ever, priority customer service, preferred pricing on repairs.  This is an affordable way to keep your unit properly maintain.  We even offer a monthly payment plan… as low as $13.25/mo!

Ice, Ice Baby!

Hello Everyone,

Ice-Ice-Baby

Hopefully, you are staying warm! The only words that come to mind are Ice, Ice Baby!  Then that 1990’s tune begins to play in my head!

[stextbox id=”warning”]If you are having problems with your heating, please call 843-821-0937.  As long as the roads are passable, we will try and help![/stextbox]

The power at our house has gone out several times this morning. The rain has been falling all morning, and the temperature hasn’t risen.  There are several bridges closed, and the roadways are dangerous.

crepe myrtleAs I am writing this, our power has gone out again. I cannot remember when the electricity to our home has been so unstable.  It just shows that amazing power of simple elements like rain, cold, ice, etc. Fortunately, my battery on my laptop hasn’t died yet, and I am using my cell phones hot spot to connect to the internet.  All is well.

frozen palm treeThis morning, I took our two pugs out to potty.  It was so rainy and cold.  Of course, the dogs weren’t thrilled about going outside.  As we were walking around the neighborhood, I noticed how sad the Palm trees looked.  Normally, they are so perky.  They always remind me of the beach… a warm, sandy, breezy beach.  A far cry from what it is right now.

In Summerville, Main Street and the bridge on the Berlin G Myers Parkway has been closed.  The local news just reported that a large pine tree has fallen on top of a mobile home.  This is much worse that I thought that it would be.

I hope that your heat is working and you are safe at home with your family. If you have to be out in this mess, be patient and take your time.  I often say that I would rather wait a few minutes longer, than wait for an ambulance to arrive!

Blessings!

Arctic Air hits Charleston SC!

Arctic Air hits Charleston!

Well, we were hoping for more snow than ice.  This morning when we got up, it looked like there was snow everywhere.  I got the dogs up and going, prepared their food, then headed out for the morning walk.

mingus

Mingus

raisin

Raisin

Raisin (the fawn pug) and Mingus (the black pug) are not fond of bad weather. They dislike the rain, and they hate the ice covered grass.  It was quite a site to see!

Of course, I love when people make the most out of a bad situation. When the dogs and I were walking, we found that there was a group of people having a blast on the hill near our pool.  People were coming out with boogie boards, and pool floats! Mom’s and Dad’s out with their kids, just having fun.  Take a look at this short video that I took.

Arctic Air has technicians on call, however, each call is going to be on a case by case basis.  Bridges and roads are still closed as of 12:30pm today.  Please be patient.  We want to be able to help as many people as possible, but we also believe in keeping our staff safe.  Thank you for your understanding!
