Energy Savings Tips …. Part 4

heat warningAnother week has almost past, and it looks like 90° weather is in our forecast. As the spring fades into summer, everyone is going to be looking for a cool place to relax.

I should mention… As the temperatures begin to increase, do not leave children or pets unattended in your car.  Temperatures can skyrocket quickly!

A test conducted by the University of San Francisco showed that in 10 minutes a closed-up car reached 99 degrees when the outside temperature was 80 degrees. In 20 minutes, the inside of the car had reached 109 degrees.  dog-car-01These temperatures can cause heat stroke, and in some cases, death.

Energy Savings Tips …. Part 4

moneyTo get the best performance and efficiency out of your air conditioning equipment, it is important to follow these guidelines.

  • Schedule a tune-up (aka, preventive maintenance, summer start-up, planned maintenance)- Your air conditioning and heating system runs most of the year.  Just like your car, your ac needs to have a tune-up.  We recommend at least twice a year.  One time before the summer season, and once before the winter season.
  • Keep lamps, lights, tvs or other heat producing items away from your thermostat. Your thermostat senses heat from these items, which can cause your air conditioning to run longer than necessary.
  • Keep any dust from building up on your registers by vacuuming them. This will help keep the flow of air moving freely and without restriction.
  • Be sure that your furniture and other objects are not impeding the flow of air from the registers.
  • Keep doors open throughout the house. This will keep the airflow at the proper levels.

If you find that your ac unit is not working, please feel free to contact us.

Also, I am still running a “Preseason Sale” on complete air conditioning units. Up to $1500 off York and Goodman units!  This sale will end soon, so don’t wait until the Dog Days of Summer.

Since the weekend is almost here, I hope that you have a great weekend!

YEAH! The Weekend Is here!

PicnicWow, what an amazing week! We have been running like crazy.  I cannot say enough about the crew that we have here at Arctic Air.  Our service technicians certainly deserve a pat on the back.  I think all of them have worked at least 12 – 14 hours a day.

Here is what one of our newest customers said,

“Wow, I … felt so bad for your colleague who was there so late, they were both wonderful!… Please thank everyone who worked so hard on this yesterday for me!” -LB, Summerville

So, to Chuck, Patrick, Troy and Craig, we would like to say, “Thank You”.  You guys help make Arctic Air such a success.  We are very proud of how you represent Arctic Air and yourselves.

In addition, the only way this company is able to operate at the high level it does, is because of teamwork.  So, I must also mention Valarie, John, Staci, Becky and Monica. Each person makes such a difference at Arctic Air. Thanks for making this a great place to work!

We count ourselves as being blessed. Yes, it is sometimes stressful, but nonetheless, we are blessed to have work, and the ability to take care of our families.

jump castleThis weekend, we are going to honor our employees by having a picnic at the shop.  I say picnic, but that might not accurately describe the festivities.  Staci has ordered food, jump castles, and other games for the day.  She has really worked hard at putting this together.

This will be a great day to take a break and enjoy the food and fellowship with family, friends and co-workers.  Again, I cannot say how blessed I feel that we are.

I will update everyone with some pictures from the event.

Enjoy your weekend!

How I saved almost $50 on my electric bill!

Hello Everyone,

This is the true story of how I saved $50 on my last electric bill!

programmable 7 day thermostatThis weekend Staci and I received the dreaded electric bill from SCE&G. With all of the super cold weather that we have had in the month of February, we were bracing ourselves for the bad news.  I have spoken to several people, and they have reported $400 – $500 electric bills.  Uggh!

Staci and I have lived in our home for about 5 years.  In a previous blog on thermostats (click here to ==> see that blog), I mentioned that we were installing a new digital thermostat made by Honeywell.  The thermostat that we installed is the Honeywell Prestige IAQ 2.0 Comfort System.

remote control thermostatThis thermostat is definitely technologically advanced, yet super easy to use.  With the touch screen, adjustments and programming are super easy.  In addition, we added the portable thermostat.  Now, when we go to bed or are upstairs, we allow the portable thermostat to control our air conditioner.

We had this thermostat install on January 31, 2014.  Troy, one of our technicians, installed it for us.

honeywell mobile siteI must say that I am a bit of a geek when it comes to technology!  I love being able to use my phone or ipad to control the thermostat.  The ultimate in convenience (and laziness).  Yes, I can be sitting in my recliner with my ipad, and adjust the thermostat!  Totally Awesome (in my opinion)!

Just after Troy installing the thermostat, I programmed our “schedule” in myself.  Again, it was super easy!

Now all of that is great, but I only expected to have a “cool” thermostat, and the ability to adjust it from my cell phone or ipad.

I have my electric bill in hand, and this is what I saw…. (account information cropped).

sce&g comparison

The savings is about $50!  Just by putting a schedule in place and letting the thermostat control it.  I will also admit, there were times in February (remember the two ice storms) that the thermostat was actually adjusted to warm our home a little more!

I am not sure that everyone will experience the same savings, but this is a great place to start. And to think, this is just the first month!

Give me a call (843-821-0937), if you would like to see about getting your new thermostat installed and programmed.

Time Change and Our Spring Preseason Sale!

[stextbox id=”warning”] TIME CHANGE REMINDER… don’t forget to set your clocks ahead 1 hour on Sunday, March 9, 2014 @ 2am.[/stextbox]

Hello Everyone,
Time to Spring forward! Arctic Air, Charleston SCWell, Spring is almost here and I cannot wait.  In the past, I have not minded the cold… I must be getting old. I am ready for the warmer days of spring. I can’t wait to be able to wear shorts, flip flops, and a t-shirt outside again.  Oh, and I am ready for there to be sunlight outside when I get home.

I am about to catch a case of spring fever.

As spring begins to move into the lowcountry, don’t forget to show that box that sits outside some TLC (tender loving care). Give us a call, and let us get your air conditioner in tip-top-shape for the hot months ahead.  It is recommended that your HVAC system be checked out at least 2 times per year. (Just think of how hard your heater has worked this winter.)

These “tune-ups” will insure that your system is working at its peak performance.  When a ac system is not working properly, it costs more to run the unit. How, you ask? In your electric bill.

In addition, these inspections can help prevent untimely major repairs, such as a compressor replacement. Call to schedule your appointment today.

HVAC Financing AvailableIf you have been putting off purchasing a new air conditioning and heating system, NOW is the time!  We have a PRESEASON SALE going on right now.  Call us before the heat of Summer hits.  We are offering up to $1500 off our regular retail prices. All air conditioners and heaters are on sale!

A/C Tips … Spring is right around the corner!

A/C Tips … Spring is right around the corner!

Hello Everyone,

charleston springOur weather in South Carolina is always hit or miss when it comes to the winter months.  Last week, we had a terrible winter storm. Some South Carolinians still do not have electricity.  And a week later, we are hitting record high temperatures. Go figure!

This week has definitely given us “Spring Fever!”  The beautiful mild days with warm sunshine beaming down… I know that I love spring time in Charleston SC.

With that in mind, before you know it, the 80°- 90°F temperatures will be here.  One thing that most people don’t think about is when the temperatures heat up, the A/C (air conditioner) is coming on.  It is real easy to flip that switch on the thermostat, and to get that air conditioner cranking out the cool air.  But, is your A/C ready to get to work?

All cars need preventive maintenance, and your a/c is no different.  Your heating and air conditioning system needs some TLC (tender loving care) also. It has worked hard to keep you warm and cozy this winter.  Now it is time to change gears for the warm to hot days to come.

Your A/C is in need of preventive maintenance.  “Why?”, you might ask.  To keep it in tip top shape and running most efficiently. One thing that Staci and I cannot stand is a high electric bill.  What is worse… a high electric bill AND not being comfortable in our home! When your unit is not running efficiently, you being to pay for it … in your electric bill (ouch!)

In addition, these inspections detect potential problems before they become expensive problems.  When repairs are caught early, you can avoid costly repairs, and possibly, keep your unit from having to be replaced.

A few weeks ago, Arctic Air had a customer that cal us because their heating unit was not working.  When we got there, we did our usual diagnostic. This is what our service technician found.  There was an electrical fire inside their unit.  All of the wiring had to be fixed. If this unit had preventive maintenance done by Arctic Air, we would have found a loose electrical connection.  This loose electrical connection caused the fire!  This is one of the items that is on our check list to be inspected.

burnt up wires

I am not sure if you can see it in this picture, but you may notice all of the burnt wires on the lower right side of the unit.  Because of the vibration from the fans and other parts, connections are bound to come loose.  This is NOT what you want to see, especially at your home.

Here is what our inspections consist of:

  • Inspect condenser coil
  • Test and adjust operating pressures
  • Test starting capabilities
  • Inspect blower assembly
  • Test amp draws on motors
  • Test voltage on motors
  • Test and check safety controls
  • Clean condensate drain
  • Lubricate necessary moving parts
  • Calibrate thermostat
  • Check for proper air flow
  • Measure temperature difference
  • Check expansion valve
  • Inspect and spray evaporator coil with cleaner (accessible only)
  • Test in a/c cycle
  • Check all electrical connections and capacitors

If you join our Discount Club, you receive a Summer Tune-up and a Winter Tune-up, no overtime charges ever, priority customer service, preferred pricing on repairs.  This is an affordable way to keep your unit properly maintain.  We even offer a monthly payment plan… as low as $13.25/mo!

T.G.I.F. – Yeahhh!

Hello everyone… the work day is coming to an end, and the weekend is at our doorstep.

I wanted to help all of my male friends out.  If you are in a relationship, you need to start planning for Valentine’s Day.  Yep, Valentine’s Day is one week away, and it is on a Friday.  With Valentine’s Day falling on a Friday, I would imagine restaurants are going to be booked to full capacity.

balloons by bird's nest floristOne year, I forgot to make reservations.  Staci and I ended up going to a restaurant here in Summerville.  They were packed but said they could squeeze us in.  We were given a table.  The table was close to a large group. As we were waiting for our food to arrive, a couple sat down at the table with us.  We looked at each other, but not a word was said.  This couple thought that we were part of the large group that was dining at the table next to us.  Finally, someone from the large group waved them over. They got up and NEVER said a word! Now that was funny!

Also, I would like to mention that you may need to call your local florist.  Don’t use an 800 number, call the florist direct (hint, hint – 843-797-7673).  When you use a 1-800 (or other toll free service), you don’t really know what you are going to get.  Support your local businesses.

Personally, I have usedbirds nest florist Bird’s Nest Florist.  Sandra and her staff always do a good job for me, and Staci is always excited about the delivery. Usually, Sandra has a little chocolate heart, or something like that, to add to the flowers if you order early for Valentine’s Day.

I also like to call personally, so that I can tell the florist what I want in the arrangement.  Of course, I don’t know what the flowers are… I usually tell Sandra that I want something tropical and she does her thing. Staci and I are both surprised!

On a side note… don’t make excuses as to why you don’t like Valentine’s Day…. the day isn’t about us.  It is about our loved ones.  You know… the ones that put up with us all year long.  If you don’t want to buy into the commercialism of the day, then make something or do something.  Just make that person feel special… because they are special!

As always, we are available on the weekends if you have any issues or emergencies.  Just call 843-821-0937 or submit a service request online.

I hope everyone enjoys the weekend.

Ahhhh, the weekend is here!

Hello Everyone,

time fliesIt seems like the older I get, the faster time flies by!  It has almost been a week since I posted anything to Facebook or Twitter.  If you didn’t hear, Arctic Air is now on Twitter! You can follow us @ArcticAirInc.

This week, I had a customer call us to have a new set of gas logs installed in his rental property.  The old logs just died and the tenants like to use them to help heat their home.  When he called, he asked how soon we could get them in.  Since it was late in the afternoon, I told him that we could schedule for the next morning at 8am.  He was thrilled because the cold weather was moving in on Charleston.

ThermometerHe and I talked a little longer, then I told him that it was going to get in the 20’s overnight. He kind of chuckled and said “It is NEGATIVE 20 here now.”  Well, I must say that I have never seen, nor felt, what -20F feels like… and I am OK with that.

[stextbox id=”warning”]Here in Charleston, we do have some more cold weather to get through.  If your heater is giving you trouble, don’t hesitate to call.  We have staff on duty during normal business hours, AND throughout the weekend and evenings for emergency service. [/stextbox]

Finally, we could use some help with reviews online.  There are several sites that allow users to leave free comments on companies that they have used.  Google+ (Go to google.com and search for Arctic Air Inc, Summerville SC.  Then click the link there), Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/arcticairsummerville)  and Yelp (http://www.yelp.com/biz/arctic-air-inc-summerville) are a few that come to mind.

Now, with that being said, if you cannot truly leave us 5 star positive reviews, please call Michael Lopez or Staci Lopez at 843-821-0937.  We want to try and resolve any issues that you may have had.  We strive for 100% customer satisfaction, however, we are not perfect and we don’t mind trying to resolve your issue(s).

tea partyStaci and I are heading to Marleyna’s Birthday Party.  She is having a tea party with all of her friends.  I have been asked to be the photographer.  I wish I had a red carpet to throw down.  I think they would have gotten a kick out of that.

The entire staff of Arctic Air wishes you a great weekend!
