A walk-in cooler sitting at 52°F can put a commercial operation in a difficult spot fast. When this Goose Creek, SC client reached out to us, their cooler was reading 52°F and not working properly. Our crew at Arctic Air Inc. arrived on June 8, 2026, checked the equipment, and started with the conditions in front of us.
The first visit showed that the system was low on refrigerant.
We added 4 pounds of R404A refrigerant to clear the sight glass and bring operating pressures as close to normal as possible. That helped us stabilize the system, but the inspection also revealed signs that pointed to a much larger equipment problem.
A 52°F Reading Pointed to Bigger Problems
We found the suction line accumulator heavily rusted and likely leaking. The evaporator was also in poor condition, and we found refrigerant oil in the condensate. With an older cooler showing several signs of deterioration, we recommended replacement rather than treating the refrigerant loss as an isolated issue.
Our client approved the quote, giving us a clear path to remove the aging equipment and install a new refrigeration system.

Installing the New Refrigeration Equipment
We returned on August 4, 2026, disconnected the existing system, and removed the old equipment from the premises. We mounted the new evaporator to the cooler ceiling with carriage bolts, nuts, and washers. For the outdoor condensing unit, we used a crane to position it on new pressure-treated lumber and secured it in place.
From there, we ran a new soft copper line set and insulated the suction line. We installed a new outdoor disconnect, completed the wiring connections, added a new PVC drain line at the evaporator, and completed the soldered connections inside and outside.
Because this system included roof and cooler penetrations, sealing was part of the installation. We used foam at the cooler penetrations and sealed the roof penetration with foam, silicone, and rubberized roof sealant.
Testing Before Calling the Job Complete
We pressure tested the system to 350 psi with nitrogen and checked the soldered connections with soap bubbles. No leaks were found. We then evacuated the system below 250 microns before weighing in the listed refrigerant charge.
Once the system was running, we added the refrigerant needed for the line-set length and set the expansion valve as needed. The walk-in cooler reached 35°F and cycled off normally.

The customer was satisfied with the completed work. For us, that final temperature reading mattered because it confirmed that the replacement system was operating normally after installation and testing.
